Pope Julius II asked Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling. He painted them all on frescoes. It took him four years; from 1508-1512. They wanted to help unite and empower Italy with the Sistine Chapel. To paint the ceiling, Michelangelo painted on wet plaster; also know as frescoes.
